NEXT MEETING – THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2007

7:30 p.m. – AMERICAN LEGION POST 91

The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.

NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!

I would like to report on fishing, however I can’t for I haven’t been, plus it has turned very cold.  I hear they are still catching large Rockfish off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina and, if the areas aren’t frozen over, there are some fresh water fish being caught. So I’m leaving fishing alone and covering important subjects that are happening in our Chapter In February.

FLEA MARKET – SATURDAY FEBRURAY 17, 2007

The annual Flea Market we have every year is very important to the success of all our functions and events that happen all year long in your fishing club.  Yes, this is your fishing club and we are a fishing club first and secondly we get involved in things that affect our fishing.

As for the Flea Market, I need all the support from each and every member.  If you can, you must try to attend the Flea Market on Saturday, February 17th.  Try to donate an item for our table so it can be sold.  If you have items in your boat, shop, shed or garage that haven’t been used in a year, it’s most likely you aren’t going to use it. Donate that item. Bring it to the meeting on Thursday, February 15th, or bring it with you when you come to the Flea Market.  Call me, Clint (410-376-3563) or Chuck (410-228-0251) or any member you know and we will see that the items gets to our table at the Flea Market.

Also at the Flea Market, we will raffle off a Lowrance X-48 High Definition Fish Finder that was donated by Frank Daringer, owner of Mid-Shore Electronics.  If you missed January’s meeting, you missed a great presentation by Frank on how to properly use and troubleshoot a fish finder.

If your membership is running out or has run out or if you know someone who wants to join the MSSA, the Flea Market is the place to do it.  We have again this year the show special and the MSSA is giving away for people that renew or new membership a chance to win one of two Chesapeake Bay Charter Tips for six people.  That’s right, two trips and it covers people who renew or people who are new members. Last year it just covered new members and it was won by a Dorchester County member.

We need every member’s support for your Flea Market.  Get a friend or neighbor to come with you.  It’s a lot of fun and there are some great bargains at this Flea Market.

ROD AND REEL FISHING COMBO RAFFLE

We started this raffle at our January meeting.  We will draw the winner at our meeting in May.  Here again, I need every member’s support.  I’m challenging every member to purchase at least six tickets for $5.00 on the fishing combo.  They are great combos and you have better odds to win then the lottery, plus you are supporting your Fishing Club.  I personally have sold over $100.00 in raffle tickets already and I challenge every member to help the best they can.

Everyone will get six chances with their newsletter except the ones who got their tickets at the January meeting or members who I have already gotten to.  Please set aside $5.00 or a check and return it to the address on the tickets. We need everyone’s help and support.

MSSA VOLUNTTER OF THE YEAR

Charlie Hutchinson won this award this year at the MSSA convention in Ocean City.  Charlie well deserves this award for the countless hours and trips and meetings that he has put in to try to solve the Menhaden problem. Congratulations Charlie!

GUEST SPEAKER

Our guest speaker this month is Marty Gary of DNR (Department of Natural Resources).  Marty is the driving force behind “MARI” (Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative).  I personally am excited about “MARI” and getting all the material from the Woodrow Wilson bridge project to make fishing reefs in the Chesapeake Bay area.  We have been promised material that will affect areas around Dorchester County - adding to the reef site off Taylors Island, starting a major reef at Summer Gooses and building a reef at the old airplane wreck in the Choptank River.  The airplane wreck is the important one for our Chapter because we can contribute our reef balls that we are making to go on that site.

I need every member who can attend the February 15th meeting to attend and show Marty and DNR that we are interested in the “MARI” project.  Bring a friend or neighbor with you to show support. This project is a chance of a lifetime for the Chesapeake Bay.

Marty has promised me that he will have a full presentation of the project with underwater video from the Point-No-Point reef site.

Please support this program and be at the meeting on Thursday.  It’s too important to the fishing in the Chesapeake Bay.

See you at the meeting or on the water.

Clint
