                NEXT MEETING – THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2006

                                                                           7:30 p.m. – AMERICAN LEGION POST 91

The MSSA is working to provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and the future of recreational fishing.

NO UNITY – NO VOICE – NO FISH!

The Dorchester County Chapter of the MSSA had its fishing tournament and crab feast on Sunday, October 8th.  The day turned out to be a great day considering we had a classic nor’easter Friday and Saturday, two days before the tournament.  There was a lot of rain and high winds those two days, so Sunday was a crap shoot.  However, Sunday turned out to be a great fishing day and the fish cooperated.  My crew was Rich Marshall and Bob Watson. Bob had to back out because he felt so bad from his chemo treatments which he had started on Monday of that week. We need to think of Bob in our prayers.

My plans that Sunday were to get to my favorite fishing hole before sun up and catch some Trout that were being caught the previous week. Rick and I were anchored up in my spot before dawn and started catching small Perch and Trout.  Most of the Trout were under sized and right after we had put an 11 inch Perch and a 14 inch Trout in the cooler, Rick had a major pull down on his spinning rod.  I netted a 24’ inch Rockfish for Rick. Not long after that I had a good hook up and another 24 inch Rock came aboard but went back overboard for he had some major sores on his skin. Rick again had his rod tip in the water from a major hit. This time I netted a 27 inch Rockfish for Rick and that went in the cooler.  We had hardly stopped celebrating and our baited hooks with peeler crabs were headed for the bottom when Rick again had a really big hook up.  I moved equ9pment out of Rick’s way as he fought this fish around the boat. This time I netted a 31 inch Rockfish for Rick and the celebrating started again. We ended up catching more smaller Rock, small Trout, small Perch and small Spot. We tried jigging but only caught small Rock, so we headed home with a nice cooler of fish.

FISHING TOURNAMENT RESULTS

We had 32 entries in the tournament and all money taken in went back to the winner. Chuck Prahl was the weigh-in master and he measured the fish from closed mouth to V of tail:

Rockfish Rick Marshall 28 ¾”

Bluefish Bob Shenton 14 ½”

Perch John Simmons 11 ½”

Trout H.G. Wilson 14 ¼”

It was a fun tournament on a beautiful day with plenty of different fish being caught.  Make plans to get in this tournament next year for it is your tournament.

CRAB FEAST

The crab feast followed the fishing tournament at 4:00 p.m. in the American Legion. We had 75 people sign up and invited guests from companies that support our fishing club.  There was plenty of steamed crabs and steamed corn in the husk for everyone.  People were great again this year in brining side dishes.  It made for a wonderful feast.  I want to thank Jim Kubista and Norm Bell for putting the crab feast together. Thanks to everyone who brought in a side dish. Charlie Hutchinson won the 50/50 drawing.

MSSA BALLOT

Please vote and get your ballots into the MSSA office before November 2nd.  Please vote for the following people:  Keith McGuire-President; Ted Slagle-Vice President, Clint Waters-Secretary; Jeff Anna-Treasurer and Robert Lee and Rob Pelicott-Members at Large.

REEF BALL PROJECT

We now have over 100 reef balls made and will be making then all year long as long as the water permits.  I want to tank my steady crew of helpers:  Phil Todd, Bob Geisler, John Byrde, Lenny Hyre and Norm Bell.  Without these helpers this project could not be done.  If you want to get involved, pleas contact me (Clint).

YEAR-LONG FISHING TOURNAMENT

The standings are the same as last month and the tournament runs until our November meetings.  Stop in the Recreational Center to look at the board to see who is winning and try to beat them. Also see Kenny Barwick or John Sard about getting 10% off all their fishing equipment.

GUEST SPEAKER

Our guest speaker this month is Kenny Barwick.  Kenny will show us how to build and use planner boards.  Kenny builds and uses planner boards all the time and has become an expert. Planner boards do catch fish and if you have never used them or if you have, this is a must meeting to attend.

See you at the meeting or on the water.

Clint
